Skills that pay the bills
In the fast-paced world of tech advancements and AI innovations, the idea of skilled trades is not only overlooked, but viewed as unnecessary. However, manual labor & skilled trades remain a crucial and indispensable aspect of our global society.
The past 30 years in the US, we have witnessed a shift in perception towards trades. Blue-collar jobs are often overshadowed by the “glamour” of white-collar professions. However, with the increasing demand for specialized skills in various industries, the narrative is changing. Skilled trades are not jobs; they are professions that require expertise, precision, and a deep understanding of the craft.
Paradoxically, the more we advance in technology and AI, the more we realize the importance of hands-on skills. A significant challenge has emerged: there's a shortage of skilled workers in various trades. This gap not only affects industries like construction, manufacturing, and automotive but also has a ripple effect on the economy as a whole.
Skilled trades form the backbone of everyone’s daily lives. From the electrician who ensures our offices, stores, and homes are well-lit to the painter who keeps our buildings safe from corrosion, mildew, and ruin, these professionals play a critical role.
It's crucial to address the stigma associated with construction. The notion that success is only achieved through a traditional college education needs to be challenged. Vocational training and apprenticeships should be talked about more in middle schools & high schools as viable and rewarding paths to success. It is one of the only industries left that truly exemplifies the so-called American Dream. Determination, curiosity, and resilience is the only requirement, instead of a mound of college debt.
Industry partners as a whole need to truly come together to make a change for all trades — apprenticeships, vocational schools, and on-the-job training programs that provide individuals with the skills needed for success in their trade.
Younger generations want technology and innovation, learning how to marry that to a historical trade ensures the sustainability in construction.
The time has come to celebrate the skilled tradespeople who build, repair, and maintain the foundation of our society.
